Antique Victorian or Edwardian "Sunday Stick" (Sabbath cane) crafted by the historic clubmaker Jack Morris, based in Hoylake/St Andrews. The handle is carved as a miniaturized wood club head, horn sole insert and a lead back-weight and hickory shaft with a brass cane tip.
An antique "Sunday Stick" (or Sabbath cane) is a specialized, dual-purpose walking stick popular during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, designed specifically to bypass strict religious bans against playing games or golf on Sunday (the Sabbath). Originating primarily in Scotland where Church of Scotland rules strictly discouraged Sunday recreation, these canes were cleverly disguised as respectable walking sticks to be taken to church, but featured a hidden utility.
