The Art of Golf by Sir W. G. Simpson, Bart. - 1892

£200.00

The Art of Golf by Sir Walter Grindlay (W.G.) Simpson, Bart., is a seminal Victorian golf instruction manual originally published in 1887, with its prominent revised second edition released in 1892.  This copy has been rebound.

Written during his tenure as the Captain of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the book is highly revered by sports historians as a cornerstone of golf literature. It is celebrated for its instructional content, its dry, sardonic wit, and its pioneering contribution to sports media.

It was the very first golf manual to feature instructional action photography. It used sequence plates of legendary figures like Old Tom Morris and Ben Sayers to visually dissect the mechanics of the golf swing.

The book has been inscribed by Lady Simpson (Anne Fitzgerald Simpson), the wife of the Author, Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson, and presented in April 1899, following Sir Walter Simpson's death in 1898.  The book was then subsequently presented by the recipient to the Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution in 1913.
